We Can Make The Difference Welcome. This website commemorates and celebrates the 30th anniversary of the battle for Terania Creek in 1979. The weapons were music, art and caring intelligence, guided by the spirit of community. The protestors argued with care for the planet and goodwill for the future at heart, as they stood up against bulldozers and the destruction of the last of the once vast Big Scrub. This website contains the "inside story" with the original articles and images from the journal, "The Message of Terania" which was produced during the campaign by the protestors who saved the Terania Rainforest. You will also find more stories, music, pictures and video from the people who were involved then, and share the spirit of the community now.
Historical Watershed The Terania protest was historic. It was the first successful community rescue of rainforest - anywhere in the world.  As a direct result of the Terania campaign, the NSW government declared a no-rainforest logging policy for the whole of the State and declared the Nightcap National Park. This was the first law declared by any government to protect rainforest. The will of the people influenced public opinion and forced the politicians to follow. In 1979 tree huggers were scorned as radical. Those values that were radical then are, thankfully, becoming more mainstream. It shows how much it is possible to change. The Terania Campaign is now officially celebrated with the naming of Protestor Falls - one of our main tourist attractions.
Change Comes When We Stand Strong Together Let's work together now and create a network of knowledge and inspiration for a better future. Our Mother, the Earth is crying out for our help and we must heed the call. The Terania Folk were successful 30 years ago. They were first on the planet to save rainforest - against all odds. The problems facing us all now seem insurmountable, but with good will and collective effort, we can save the world. Join us now!

Nan Nicholson’s personal perspective on the Terania blockade.

Thirty-five years ago, soon after arriving to take up our new career as impoverished new settlers at the top end of Terania Creek Road, Hugh and I were living in a tent on our 106 ha of forest and lantana. We gazed daily at the enclosed misty rainforest of Terania Creek Basin to our north. One morning Hugh went for a walk up above the Basin. I walked in the other direction, down the road to get the mail.  We each came back with news.  I had discovered that we were definitely not going to get any form of government support and we would have to starve or leave.  Hugh had met some reconnaissance foresters who told him the Basin was to be clear-felled.

We decided to sell up; everything was just too hard.
